Summary

The primary purpose of the Program Manager, Web Communications – Research, position is to oversee activities related to MD Anderson’s external research web content strategy, including content development, maintaining existing research content for disease sites, search engine optimization and supervision of direct report(s) with research content responsibility.

The ideal candidate will have experience in research and healthcare writing.

Key Functions

Program/Project Management:

  • Manages MD Anderson’s external research web content, including strategy development, content writing and prioritization, search engine optimization and subject matter expert approval processes.
  • Regularly meets with research leadership to understand ongoing priorities in order to translate into the overall web content strategy.
  • Leads the development of web content emphasizing the themes and strategic decisions of our Strategy goal of becoming the No. 1 cancer research organization.
  • Responsible for assignment and tracking of related work by direct report and assists with supporting distributed editors responsible for maintaining research webpages.
  • Must ensure strategic and brand alignment.

Writing/Editing:

  • Oversees writing, editing and approval of research content for mdanderson.org, with a focus on research areas, including lab sites, research studies and core facility webpages, and research-focused publication articles.
  • Regularly writes and edits copy for digital audiences. Clear, consistent writing and editing in all work products.
  • Command of Associated Press and MD Anderson style.
  • Proactively tracks down communications and story ideas.

Strategic Counsel/Education:

  • Counsels and educates colleagues and internal customers regarding digital communications best practices.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with client group(s) to better understand roles and processes.
  • Routinely attends meetings with client leadership, attends key customer meetings and is available for consultation, as needed.
  • Along with the senior communications specialist, acts as a consultant to distributed web authors and users responsible for research-focused web content.

Measurement:

  • Consistently tracks and analyzes success of program, projects and initiatives, provides status reports and identifies as well as solves potential problems.
  • Collaborates with SEO Program Manager to assess search engine optimization efforts and identify research content gaps.
  • Regularly provides reports to leaders, research leadership and key stakeholders.

People Management:

  • Directs work of a senior communications specialist.
  • May direct work of external service providers and contracted personnel.

Other Duties as assigned

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.

Preferred: Master’s Degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.

Experience

Required: Six years of experience public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field. With preferred degree, four years of required experience. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.

Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
